ANNOUNCEMENT: Our First Class on September 2nd in ROMC!

Apologies to everyone for not front loading this information! Our first class is on September 2nd. We will be meeting at Richard Oakes Multicultural Center (ROMC) on the Terrace Level of the Cesar Chavez Student Center.

And with the Fall 2009 Semester almost upon us, we're all going to be stepping onto a campus very much under reconstruction. Not only is the replacement of the roof of the Cesar Chavez Student Center changing the face of campus, but the renovation and retrofitting of the J Paul Leonard Library has changed the sounds of our community, too.

So while the improvements of campus facilities have been funded, the faculty who teach and the staff who provide direct services to folks on campus face wage cuts and increased workloads. As students, we confront more fees and less classes making it much more difficult to graduate with less debt.

Organized students critically analyzing this situation on campus can play a tremendous role in inspiring those demoralized and resigned to the cuts. Join CORE in formulating an alternative to budget cuts and fee hikes. With an explicit intent to nurture relationships, we're hoping that through the resurrection of the Experimental College comes a unity of faculty, staff, and students based on mutual understanding.

Here is what's in store for the first day (September 2nd):
  • 10:10-10:40 Introductions (Sharing your interests, vision, and projects)
  • 10:45-11:25 Screening "Speak Out: In Defense of Public Education" Budget Cuts Documentary
  • 11:25-11:35 Break
  • 11:35-12:15 Learning from the past: A discussion with Experimental College veterans
  • 12:15-1:00 Ground rules for the present and discussion of the "Proposed Curriculum"

We will have "San Francisco State University Petition For Course By Independent Study" at our second class meeting. The Chair of the Department of Political Science, faculty of the College of Ethnic Studies, or Director of the Environmental Studies Program will sign off on the completed forms. And, add slips will be distributed upon completion of these form by all parties. (There is also the strong possibility that your department may offer Independent Study credit, as well. More information regarding this process can be provided upon request.)

Also, please sign up on a contact sheet with your availability so we can create more sections that will accommodate those students that cannot attend a Wednesday 10 am -1 pm class session.

If you have any pertinent questions, feel free to email core.sfsu@gmail.com.
